Original by Joseph Kenny -Original by Joseph Kenny As many fans of music know, the lyrical parts of a song are usually the most important and integral pieces to a particular song or piece’s success. Many times these words are the only part of a song that fans will remember or be able to recognize in an instant. In addition, it is common for artists to make the leap into becoming a superstar when they come out with great lyrics for their new hits. But the truth is that not every artist in the world who is selling CDs and concert tickets has great lyrics to their work, or any at all for that matter. You might be wondering, how can music be good without meaningful words, much less having no words at all? This article should help to answer that question and change the common notion that all great music must have unbelievable lyrics as well.To start out with, it is important to realize that music is not just the songs a person can hear on a radio. In fact, the first pieces of music were almost exclusively played in a concert hall. In this setting, a group of different instruments play in unison to a conductor’s movements. There are no words because quite simply there doesn’t need to be any. Some of the most famous musical work in the world, and oldest at that, is often played in this style. While not popular with the youth today, classical music, as it is often termed, often goes hand in hand with being upper-class. Whether this is a fair pairing or not, that is debatable. But this much is true, many people find deeper meaning and enjoy this style of music without looking for words to accompany they harmony of the instruments! On the other hand, a popular selection at almost any night or dance club is techno music. Techno music is often generated on a computer, and combines wacky sounding drum beats and other instrumental sounds to make a song that sounds like it was electronically produced. This music has many different beats and often is extremely easy to dance to. While it can have words, it is more common for techno songs to be without any human voices, or to use them sparingly. Even with the absence of almost any words at all, however, techno music remains a popular choice on any dance floor and it would be hard to find a club that doesn’t play at least one song. Indeed there are even some popular techno artists, whose main musical talents lie in creating new beats and remixing past billboard toppers! All in all, it should be fairly obvious by now that a song doesn’t have to have lyrics to be considered worth listening to. Many different types and genres of music embedded in our society today are, in fact, found without any words at all. Whether it be rich classical music that your grandparents listen to, or fast-moving techno music that you dance to, words are not as important as they may seem initially.

Original by Melanie Dejonge -Original by Melanie Dejonge In the summer of 2007, Sara Bareilles had a lock on the radio waves with her bubbly tune “Love Song.” Radio stations were playing it nonstop, digital downloads were burning up the information superhighway, it was an iTunes download of the day, it was honored by being a featured song for Starbucks. It was featured in a Rhapsody commercial. Bareilles played it on the Late Late Show among many other shows. It seemed as if everyone and their brother was shouting out, “I’m not gonna write you a love song ’cause you asked for it ’cause you need one, you see.”So, where did this this catchy song come from? A terminated relationship, a broken heart? No, the explanation is actually quite a bit more funny than that.Believe it or not, the lyric is actually directed at her record label! She penned the lyric to tell about her unhappiness with the label for pressuring her to focus on more typically radio-friendly pop material. It’s really the oldest scenario, actually. A company brings an artist on board because they have that “je ne sais quoi” that sets them apart from all the others, and then begins to push them to change - to change to become like all the others.I don’t think they’re resentful of Sara now, however. The musical pressure that she penned in “Love Song” has generated them a ton of song purchases, and through that a ton of money. If all songwriters could generate that much capital slamming them, I’m pretty sure they would not have a problem with it.In actuality, they might even create arguments just to instigate it!As it stands however, Sara B stays the only songwriter on the summer charts to have a hit thats about conflict, not with a lover or an ex-lover, but with a giant company. And I’m pretty sure it’s a record thats most likely going to stand.

Original by Anthony Benjamin -Original by Anthony Benjamin Harps, all different, but still a part of the harp family, can be traced to just about every continent on earth. Asia has very few types of harps, there are still some native harps, however, only in limited production.Egyptian, Persian, and Greek harps are some of the oldest dating back some 6000 years.South American harps are derived from harps brought from Spain in the early 1600’s. The most popular of South American harps is the Paraguayan harp, the national Instrument of Paraguay. There are many different kinds of harp in Africa. They do not have forepillars and so are either bow harps or angle harps. As well as true harps such as Mauritania’s ardin, there are a number of instruments that are difficult to classify, often being labeled harp-lutes, another term for them is spike harps. The West African Kora is the best known of African harps, the strings run from a string arm to a ’spike’ and the resonating chamber is attached to the base of the spike.Europe has many harps if not the most from Greece to Ireland dating back 3000-5000 years: the Cross Strung Harp, Irish Harp and Double Harp are just a few. There are only a few surviving harps from medivel times like the Waterburg Harp and Queen Mary Harp. Harps are still a big part of European culture. Pictures of harps can be found on wine and whiskey bottles, money and even Coat of Arms.Like South American harps modern American harps are also derived from European harps imported in the early 1600’s. The kind of wood used to make harps varies by region. Harp wood must be a strong wood, like Ebony or Mahogany, as a harp needs to hold a great amount of string tension. The strings of harps are made of nylon, steel or copper. Old harp strings from around the world where made of catgut “sheepgut,” hide or in Asia they used silk and in Africa antelope hide.Catgut is the name applied to cord of great toughness, prepared from the intestines of the sheep or goat, and occasionally from those of hog, horse, mule, pig, and donkey. Those of the cat are not employed, however it is supposed that the word is properly kitgut (”violin string”), kit being derived from the ancient word “citara” or “kitara” from which comes the modern word “guitar.” The present form may have arisen through confusion that kit = cat. Another explanation of the origin of the cat in catgut is that it is an abbreviation for cattle which originally denoted not only cows, but all types of livestock.Harps produce calm music. It is said: If if one can play a Piano one can also play a harp.

Original by Douglas Wolk -Original by Douglas Wolk (Page 1 of 3)No band develops in a vacuum; every band starts out thinking, at least a bit, of other musicians that they want to take after or rebel against. But Nirvana was the first great band of actual music snobs: record fiends who wanted to make it very clear exactly what they listened to. They all loved Led Zep and Aerosmith and CCR and Black Sabbath and Kiss and then some more Led Zep on top of that. Mostly, though, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic had grown up as Pacific Northwest punk rock kids. They hung out with the Melvins in Aberdeen, Washington, were required by circumstance to define their position with respect to K Records and the Olympia scene and carried Flipper and Bad Brains records like shields to ward off poseurs. (Dave Grohl had a roughly equivalent experience growing up in the DC area.) When they hit the big time, they covered their favorite bands, got them to open for Nirvana, wore their T-shirts every chance they got. Kurt even oversaw reissues of his beloved Raincoats’ lost work. In case there was any ambiguity left about who Nirvana considered their ancestors, it’s all laid out in Kurt’s Journals — the scribblings of an inveterate listmaker who clearly loved even writing the names of his favorite records, like talismans of good luck and good punk rock karma. Certain discs turn up again and again in Kurt’s pantheons of music: some are multiplatinum warhorses (Meet the Beatles, Aerosmith’s Rocks), others are hopelessly obscure (Fang’s Land Shark, the self-titled Tales of Terror album). Most of them, though, are remarkable American indie-rock and hardcore albums from the ’80s, with a few artier European post-punk records and the inevitable Leadbelly album thrown in. They’re worth investigating for anyone who loves Nirvana: these are not just the raw materials Cobain and Novoselic and Grohl transmuted into gold, they’re what the band aspired to. The Best Of Leadbelly Artist: Lead Belly Release Date: 2003When Nirvana played their wrenching cover of Leadbelly’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” (a.k.a. “In the Pines”) on MTV Unplugged, it looked like an unexpected gesture toward the blues blood that still courses so powerfully through rock’s veins. Actually, though, Kurt doesn’t seem to have been so into vintage blues in general — he just loved Leadbelly obsessively (and had previously recorded four Leadbelly songs with Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan). This collection is a solid introduction to the “King of the Twelve-String Guitar,” a roaring ex-con who miraculously pulled joyful music out of his personal horrors.Surfer Rosa / Come On Pilgrim Artist: The Pixies Release Date: 1988Kurt called this 1988 album “a die-cast metal fossil from a spacecraft,” and some of the Pixies’ favorite tricks — endlessly looping riffs that had never quite been used before, tense clean-toned verses that bloom into explosive, distorted choruses — showed up on Nevermind a few years later. Steve Albini’s drumstick-to-your-skull engineering work here pretty obviously inspired Nirvana to hire him for In Utero, too. But most of what Nirvana got from the Pixies was an attitude: the sense of being off-balance and screaming while keeping one foot in tightly controlled structure.

Original by Charlie Wallace -Original by Charlie Wallace When someone talks about ‘Guitar Greatness’, what do they really mean? Do they mean the ability to play any song instantly after hearing it, having incredible technique or being a superb composer? The real answer is none of these, because people seem to think that having the ‘abilities’ I talk about above instantly makes them a great guitar player. The real secret to ‘Guitar Greatness’ is attitude while you are playing, having your own signature style and putting that, your personal guitar style, into everything you play, even covers. I was recently watching a video of the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. He was playing a cover of the Jimmi Hendrix classic ‘Voodoo Child’. Even though Stevie could have just played the song the exact same way that Jimi Hendrix played it, he made it different by adding his own signature guitar style into the song. How did he do that? By just letting it come to him. If you haven’t been playing guitar for a long period of time you may find this hard to grasp onto, but when you have really achieved ‘Guitar Greatness’, you should be able to sit down with any musician, start jamming and pour your emotions out through your playing. That’s exactly what Stevie Ray Vaughn did, and that is why he was and is so famous and called a legend. People think that the guitar is an instrument that anyone can master, but it takes someone with a mixture of determination, musical sense, perseverance and roughness. If you don’t have those qualities the good news is that you can create them. You create these by simply playing your guitar as much as possible, creating your own sound while also learning the styles of the greats that played before you. One more crucial aspect of achieving ‘Guitar Greatness’ is having respect for any style, you don’t have to like it, but you have to respect anything that is played on the guitar, no matter if it is Flamenco, Rock, Jazz, Blues, Metal whatever. The secret is that you do not have to have incredible technique to master the guitar, Hendrix didn’t, but he made up for it with attitude! Good luck finding your own signature guitar style.

Free Books Music Articles- The Physical Application Of Playing The Piano -Original by Mike Shaw

Original by Mike Shaw -Original by Mike ShawThe hand in its relation to playing the piano keyboard is the final stage in a process that normally will start with the eyes or possibly the ears. While the eyes and ears are not absolutely necessary we can agree that an outside influence that’s creates an idea or a thought is needed before the brain can send messages to the muscles and bones of the arm and hand. The framework of the arm and hand consists of 30 bones: 1 for the upper arm, 2 for the forearm, 8 for the wrist, 5 for the palm of the hand, and 14 for the fingers and thumb. The hand and wrist are, strictly speaking, attached to only one of the two bones of the forearm. This may easily be proved. Let the right arm be loosely extended, and the hand made to-turn half round and back again without bending at the wrist, the fingers of the left hand during this motion touching lightly the ” under” bone of the right arm close to the elbow. As the hand turns, the upper bone alone turns with it, attached to, and “rolling” on the lower one at both elbow and wrist. The terms “under” and “upper” are applied only relatively to the two bones of the forearm, as by means of motion at the shoulder-joint their respective positions may be reversed. In the present instance the position in which they are regarded as ” upper ” and “under” is that in which, when the arm is outstretched, the thumb is uppermost. The bones of arm and hand are dependent for there motion on the action of the muscles, which are attached in the case of the hand and arm nearly always to bone, for the purpose of moving it. A bone cannot be altered in position unless the muscle or muscles moving it are altered in shape. When uncontracted, every muscle assumes the greatest length and the softest consistency natural to it. When forcibly contracted it is shortest and hardest. There are two sets of muscles used to move the hand, the flexors and the extensors. The former are situated chiefly on the front of the forearm, and draw the fingertips towards the palm of the hand; the latter, situated on the back of the arm, are instrumental in opening the hand and straightening the fingers. The contraction of either set of muscles draws the bones into which they are inserted towards the bone from which they originate. If the hand and arm were allowed to fall loosely by the side, and if the attitude assumed by the fingers were noticed, it will be seen that they do not hang straight, but are kept partially bent or flexed. If they are then straightened or extended, the stretch can be felt, and concentration is needed to keep this position, and when this effort is relaxed, the fingers return to their previous rounded shape. The muscles when lying at rest, or in other words, without contraction of either flexors or extensors, cause this attitude of the fingers. It is to be noticed that this natural attitude is the same as that used in playing on the piano. It may be as well to employ in future the words “stiff” and “loose” to denote the two states of the muscles: the former to the forcibly contracted, the latter to the perfectly natural state.
